/Shocka: ‘Pakistan Link’ To Mumbai Attacks
Indian media are reporting that the sole survivor of the group of gunmen has been identified as Mohammad Ajmal Qasam.
Officials believe he was one of 10 men who carried out the attacks.
The gunman, who is believed to be a Pakistani national, was captured alive.
He reportedly told interrogation officials that he and his group wanted to carry out “India’s 9/11”.
Meanwhile, India has said it has proof of a Pakistani link to the attacks which claimed the lives of 174 people.
That figure has been revised down from earlier reports that suggested close to 200 people had died.
“We have evidence that the terrorists came from Pakistan,” said M.L. Kumawat, India’s special secretary for internal security, without giving any more details.
Pakistan has warned it would move troops to the Indian border if tensions between the nuclear-armed rivals spilled over.
An official in Islamabad said the next one to two days would be crucial for the nuclear-armed neighbours’ relations.
Pakistan demanded evidence linked to India’s allegations and reversed its decision to send its spy chief to help investigations.
But the neighbouring government reinforced its condemnation of the assaults and reiterated a denial of any involvement by state agencies.
“We stand shoulder to shoulder with the Indian people to defeat this common enemy,” foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told a news conference in Islamabad.
Other reports in India said the men are linked to a group known as Lashkar-e-Taiba.
The group is understood to be a Pakistan-based movement that has fought Indian forces in the disputed Kashmir region.
They were blamed for an attack on India’s parliament building in 2001.
